WHO IS SONIC BUTTERFLY ?

Sonic Butterfly is a stunning visual musical show. The 6ft projection wings on each side of the performer bring the show to life with mesmerizing visuals and dynamic lighting. Andrea Brook is as physically dynamic as she is creative, as she dances with the harp as she plays it.

Sonic Butterfly is a truly unique experience that your audience will never forget, elegant and exciting, innovative and inspiring.  “Sonic Butterfly is the perfect entertainment… larger than life to impress people who have seen it all.”

Sonic Butterfly, a long-string harp, is an extraordinary blend of harp, cello, viola, piano, acoustic guitar and Tibetan singing bowl. Technically a harp, Sonic Butterfly’s strings are tuned where each string is one note, and all 26 strings create 2 full octaves in the musical range of cello and viola. The strings are set up like a piano, and the resonating chambers are built like an acoustic guitar. The brass strings are played like a Tibetan singing bowl by running gloved fingers along them to create longitudinal vibrations.

MUSIC EDUCATION

“Sonic Butterfly was the most unique and engaging musical experience I’ve ever been a part of. The group of Ojai Valley School students I brought were in awe of the performance and as soon as it ended asked when they could return. I grew up with music and have played stringed instruments since I was 10 and have never felt so moved by music. The super Sonic Butterfly experience brought music to a whole new level I never knew existed.”

—Zach Byars, Ojai Valley School Outdoor Education Director & History Teacher

ABOUT ANDREA BROOK, creator

The concept for Sonic Butterfly was born in San Miguel de Allende, Mexico, where Andrea was performing for a Day of the Dead festival in 2012. Entranced by the return of the monarch butterfly as they came home to Mexico after their yearly migration, Andrea felt a deep resonance to their process of transformation and purpose. Simultaneously, a Rumi poem was recited and one line made it all clear, “Jump into the fire, become the butterfly, become the butterfly.” Andrea dedicated herself to create Sonic Butterfly and an immersive musical chrysalis.

Sonic Butterfly has transformed architecture and natural environments into large-scale immersive musical instruments since 2013. Having performed throughout the globe, featured presentations include the historic El Rey Theatre in Los Angeles, Caesar’s Palace in Las Vegas, the Atlanta Motor Speedway, a grand cathedral in San Miguel de Allende, Mexico, downtown Sao Paulo, Brazil, and Richard Branson’s Necker Island in the British Virgin Islands. Sonic Butterfly performs for corporate clients including Rolls Royce, Lincoln Motors and Caterpillar, for festivals around the world including Brazil, Costa Rica, Mexico, Bulgaria and the US, and in theaters like the Alys Stephens Performing Arts Center, the Regent Theater, and Libbey Bowl.

PERFORMANCES AND APPEARANCES

Andrea Brook has presented performances at performing arts centers, festivals, museums and corporate events since 2001. She has worked with Cirque du Soleil, symphony orchestras, opera, rock, classical, world and new age musicians through out the globe and has directed and performed in thrilling shows from the Grand Theater in Shanghai to a 9th Century Medieval Castle in Italy, a cathedral in San Miguel de Allende Mexico to the center of downtown Sao Paulo Brazil.

THE SHOW AT LOWE MILL

“Jump Into the Fire” is Andrea Brook’s solo show taking you into the sight, sound and story of Sonic Butterfly, a two octave, acoustic, chromatic long-string harp, designed by Andrea. The strings are at minimum 60 feet long and span out over the audience, transforming indoor and outdoor theaters, buildings, and gardens into a stunning immersive musical instrument. “It’s like being inside YoYo Ma’s cello.” Andrea weaves together her original solo compositions with tracks from a wide variety of genres and her eloquent descriptions and anecdotes to present the full experience of this transformational harp and her international journey with it.
